Check out this cool trailer for Barb's book Air
Hello, my name is Barb, and I'm a compulsive writer and dreamer. Laxmi kindly asked me to write about why Bollywood inspires me -- or something related to why I am inspired by India in some of my books, set in the fantasy world of Silvery Earth. You can read about my love story with India which evolved into love for Bollywood (courtesy of British Airways on a flight to L.A. back in 2007).
I used India as inspiration for the Southern Kingdoms which feature prominently in Tales of the Southern Kingdoms 1&2 + Books of the Immortals – Air. As I have a few more ideas, eventually I might write More Tales of the Southern Kingdoms. And I'm also considering setting my next graphic novel in the Southern Kingdoms – if I decide to do another. Please keep in mind that it's a fantasy world, not Earth, and I might have misused or changed the meaning of names or other things.
I had an Indian beta-reader for Air and he said nothing about names and congratulated me for the research, then another Indian reader wanted to pull her hair out because I called a bad guy "Ramesh" and other little things. So you're warned. It's inspired by India, but it's not India!
Anyway, I am a very visual writer - I put down "movies" that I see in my head - so I like having "virtual casts" for all my stories. My main Muse has been Keanu Reeves for the past 11 years, but this year I've added Hrithik Roshan (although I haven't made him absolute protagonist yet... Still pondering what his story could be), who sort of took over my science fantasy series that will come out in December (but it's not India inspired, so you won't recognize him unless I tell you which character he is in my head).
I look forward to adding more Bollywood faces to my virtual casts, if only for my own pleasure, as I hate descriptions and I usually describe very little of my characters' appearance because, as a reader, descriptions confuse me, so I'd rather let my own readers create their own images in their head.
I've been writing for over 30 years, but started publishing (mostly in English, as Italians don't read) last year. I'm slowly but steadily moving forward, at sloth pace (which sometimes is frustrating), but I'm not giving up. The one thing I might give up is publishing, but I'll never stop writing. I love it too much!
I don't have advice for aspiring writers, because I started so long ago, just for myself, that I don't remember what it felt like at the beginning. I just had to write, and write I did. Most of those stories are unpublishable, of course, but some have the germ of excellent ideas, hence the rewriting occurring lately (starts with a translation of the Italian original, then evolves into something else).
I also plan many new stories, so if you like fantasy, sci-fi or even contemporary stories, stay tuned!
